New Curriculum From Kindermusik® International

OUR TIME

This  new program for our children age 18 mos. to 3-1/2 is called Our Time. Kindermusik International has incorporated the latest child development research to produce a wonderful series that is the most outstanding and highest quality in early childhood music programs. Musical selections are new and captivating.  The musical activities benefit your child in these areas of development: physical, emotional, language, social, and cognitive.  And as in the past, all activities will be joyful and  fun!

Here are a few of the New Ideas you'll experience in OUR TIME

Exploration Time: Children will have ample  time to explore our instruments. When an object (instrument, hoop etc.) is introduced in class,  there will be a short time for free play while parents observe,  interact,  guide and delight in their child's creativity. Research shows that children develop problem-solving abilities as they inventively create ways to use their object. A musical activity will follow, utilizing the child's creativity.

Scaffolding: Adults and children exploring and creating ideas together with instruments, movement and song. There is NO BETTER WAY to strengthen emotional bond and increase learning potential than playful, meaningful interaction with a loved adult.

Story Time: With large colorful illustrations, and stories sprinkled with repetitive sentences, children participate through movement (such as hopping like a kangaroo) and helping to repeat vocabulary. Your child's enjoyment of literature and speech development will be fostered in every class.

Rhythm and Tonal patterns: Repetition of song-word patterns such as "Doot doot deedle eet" encourages playful repetition of patterns to internalize and develop a sense of rhythm. The group, and individuals repeat singing tonal patterns such as "Hello" or "Good Day." Repeating singing patterns are "in tune" with our no-pressure Kindermusik philosophy wherein the children enjoy and build confidence by participating in music rather than performing. Also, verbal skills are increased with this "playing with words."

What the Experts are Saying. . .

Development of the Whole Child
Dan DeJoy, Ph.D., Speech-Language Pathologist

"Development is not a straight line, but rather a zigzag pattern. Kindermusik is developmentally appropriate and allows children to grow at their own pace. A child’s development is a natural and enjoyable process, and Kindermusik’s idea of "a good beginning never ends" suggests just this – it gives parents permission to be themselves and allows then to have fun with their children."

Literacy

Claudia Quigg M.Ed., Founder and Executive Director of Baby TALK

Baby TALK is an organization dedicated to helping parents become better parents to their children. The program is affiliated with Dr. T. Berry Brazelton’s "Touchpoints" project. Since 1986 Baby TALK programs have been replicated in more than 150 communities across 20 states and Canada.

"When introduced appropriately, music and literature play an amazing role in the development of infants and toddlers. I’m happy that Kindermusik has extended their programs to include this time of life when brain development is most vulnerable and parents are most in need of support and direction."

Movement and Physical Development

Anne Green Gilbert, Movement Specialist, Author,
Creative Dance for All Ages, and Director, Creative Dance Center

"Children learn through movement and music is movement. Repetition of movements, demonstrated in the Kindermusik Movement Chart, is important for brain and motor development. Movement requiring both horizontal and vertical tracking of the eye facilitates language development for reading readiness."

Too Young to be in Class? Too Old?

Q. My child will be the youngest in his Our Time class, is this too early to have him in music class?

A. Absolutely not!!! Even if your child does not appear to be on task in Our Time, it does not indicate that learning is not going on. Children learn through their bodies and often will wander around the room for a number of weeks before they settle down into class activities. He's still listening, absorbing, and benefiting from our musical activities as he "wanders!" This will also happen with the oldest children in the Village (0 to 18 month) classes, especially as they begin to walk. You should be congratulated for your child's ability to be independent and confident enough to leave you while he explores.

Q. My child will be the oldest in her Our Time class, will she still be able to grow and develop musically around all of the younger children?

A. Definitely YES.  Older children (three to three and one-half years) in the Our Time classes are the class leaders.  The examples they set, the creativity they are now able to use boosts their confidence and self esteem.  Each activity is geared to a variety of ages, so when babies are, for example, trying to jump, the older children are practicing and increasing their jumping and large-motor skills perhaps by hopping or jumping in a circular pattern. The music on the CD's is still the wide variety they need to hear at this age, incorporating classical, jazz, multi cultural etc... among the children's tunes. And the time they spend musically with their loving adult in class is invaluable to their development.
